Hi my name is Hussain and today i will share my Matariki descriptive writing.
waiti
It was a highly valued food of Māori, that was harvested at the beginning of the Māori new year. ... Wai
means water in Te Reo, and Waiti is the star that is connected to fresh water and all the creatures that
live in rivers, streams and lakes. Especially the korokoro. Waiti also means to be sweet or melodious.
What does Matariki mean?
Matariki has two meanings, both of which refer to the cluster of stars. Mata Riki means Tiny Eyes, and Mata Ariki means Eyes of God.
To learn more about the story of the Eyes of God, check out this awesome animation by Atawhai Tibble. This video was made for Year 1 students, although it’s still quite haunting. The original story from the people of Ngai Tuhoe has Tawhirimatea ripping his eyes out and throwing them to the heavens. In this version he uses his tears:
Tupuanuku
Tapuaenuku is the star connected to food grown in the ground. “Tupu” means 'to grow' and “nuku” is the shortened version of “Papatuanuku” and means 'earth'. ... Tupuarangi is the star that connects the cluster to the harvesting of birds and other elevated food products like fruit and berries from the trees.
